HOW TO DYE YOUR HAIR AT HOME
HOW TO DYE YOUR HAIR AT HOME
Dying your hair has always been a complicated and delicate process which is why most turn to a professional. However, with a couple more weeks of lock-down to spare, why not take this opportunity to channel your inner Brad Mondo? This article will give you all the knowledge you need to give you a complete guide to getting your new look along and the aftercare required.
1- Getting the right hair-dye colour
The colour you
get in the end will depend on your base colour. As you won’t have a professional
adjusting the hair colour and developer to get the exact colour you want, use
the colour advertised on the box as a guide. When picking the right shade of dye,
don’t worry if you can’t find the perfect shade you are looking for. You can always
adjust it to your desired shade.
-
Lighter
shade - mix it with conditioner until it is two shades darker than the shade you
want.
-
Darker
shade – mix it with a darker dye from the same product line and company.
Think of the
colour spectrum and how your hair colour will mix with the hair dye colour to know
what the final colour will be. Eg. if you have dark blonde hair and try to it blue
don’t be surprised if you end up with green hair because yellow + blue = green.
Tip: When
buying hair dyes be sure to buy two boxes in case you decide to change your final
shade.
2- Preparation
To ensure a
smooth process there are a few steps to do before you colour your hair.
1. Don’t wash your hair for 2-3 days as
your natural oils will protect your scalp from the chemicals and hair and hair
dyes are formulated to worker this way.
2. Use some Vaseline around your hairline
and ears to prevent your skin from staining.
3. Use gloves to protect your hands from
the exposure to chemicals ( Nitrile gloves work best)
3- Applying dye
Be sure your
hair is dry first. Take a strand of hair start brushing the dye on from the roots
to the ends. Make sure you fully saturate and evenly distribute the dye before
you move on. Follow any additional steps mentioned on the box and leave the dye
in as instructed and wash.
4- Aftercare
Now that you
have finished colouring your hair, here is some tips to keep your hair healthy
and the colour long lasting.
· - Water
will wash out the colour in your hair so avoiding it will be your best bet to make
your colour last.
· - Wash
your hair at the end of your shower to limit water exposure.
· - Use
colour safe shampoo and conditioner to slow down colour loss.
· - Avoid
heat so skip the curlers and straighteners and air dry as much as possible.
· - Use a hair mask once or twice a week to nourish and repair any damages to keep it healthy and shiny.
